Cuttack’s annual Durga Puja immersion, usually marked by grandeur and devotion, took a violent turn on Friday evening after a clash broke out between two groups over loud music during a procession. The situation escalated quickly, forcing police to intervene and eventually resort to a lathi-charge to bring the crowd under control.
What was meant to be a night of rhythm and reverence turned into one of confrontation and chaos, raising questions about public safety and crowd control during large-scale religious celebrations in Odisha’s cultural capital.
According to initial reports, the violence occurred near Buxi Bazaar area, one of the busiest immersion routes in Cuttack, when two procession groups allegedly got into a heated argument over the volume and choice of music being played during their respective processions.
Witnesses said that what started as a verbal dispute soon spiraled into stone pelting and pushing, disrupting the smooth flow of the immersion procession. The celebratory beats of drums and DJs quickly gave way to sirens and panic.
Police personnel deployed on-site tried to pacify both sides, but as the tension escalated, they were forced to use mild lathi-charge to disperse the crowd and restore order. Several people sustained minor injuries, though no fatalities were reported.
Senior police officials, including officers from Cuttack DCP’s office, rushed to the spot after receiving alerts from the control room. According to sources, over a dozen platoons of police had already been deployed across key immersion points to prevent exactly such incidents, but the sudden outbreak of violence took authorities by surprise.
In a statement, a police official said:
“The situation is now under control. We have identified individuals involved in creating the disturbance. Strict action will be taken.”
By late night, immersion activities resumed under tight security, with additional patrols ensuring smooth movement of remaining idols toward the Kathajodi river ghats.

By Saturday morning, normalcy had returned to Cuttack, with police maintaining vigilance in sensitive pockets. A few people were detained for questioning, and a formal investigation has been launched to identify the primary instigators.
Meanwhile, civic groups have called for better crowd management and awareness campaigns, urging puja committees to prioritize discipline over display.
